Not sure whether it's my age or too much time watching Michael Portillo on the TV but I just love steam trains! So when I was offered the opportunity to ride on the Footplate I leapt at the chance! The fact that it was on a special train chartered by Hobsons Brewery to celebrate their 25th Anniversary was just the icing on the cake! The train departed Kidderminster station full of happy drinkers and I couldn't wait to get to Highley where my leg in the hot seat would begin.
It was fascinating to sit on the little pull down seat next to the driver and stoker, watching them tweek and coax the engine up and down the hills between Highley and 
Bridgnorth. My only regret is that I didn't ask for the chance to sound the whistle! The Severn Valley Railway offer various options for people wishing to ride the footplate or even learn to drive a steam train - find out more here! Arrival at Bridgnorth meant I had to leave the cab but did mean I could now sample the beer! A refreshing glass of Manor Ale, the Hobsons beer brewed especially for the SVR was just the ticket. We headed back to the Engine House at Highley for a delicious lunch provided by Ludlow Food Centre and the chance to explore the permanent exhibitions housed here. ![]()
It was fascinating to learn that the mail coach houses here is the one from the Great Train Robbery and if you visit don't miss the chance to view the Royal Coach, made for King George VI during WW2.
